Worms
In hunger and loneliness, you open the can
Tear the metal
The thick sauce spills across the table
The worms spill out
slimy
Squirming over the old wood
The empty, corroded, and sharp metal falls to the floor
With a dry thud
It rolls away
Forgotten
hunger
But the maggots eat the table
Chew the wood
Gobble up the top
Run down the four legs
They bite and crunch
Out of hunger and loneliness, you opened the can
You tore the metal
You wounded the flesh
The table was swallowed.
And you had to run out the door.
Now here
At the edge of the ancient forest
You hear the howling inside
Mad
Deep
Passionate
Delirious
The dark depths of the forest pulsate and call you
Not to enter
Not to walk through
But to become woodland
With bruised and dripping fingers
Sticky and bloody
You stand here on the threshold
Patiently
Remembering how to become forest.
